Chapter Thirteen

The night of the full moon was finally upon us. I’d squeezed in as much training as possible under the watchful eyes of Kieran, Keane, Riona, and Iridia. I couldn’t do anything more to prepare myself. During the past week, while remaining ever studious and vigilant, I had become alarmingly emotionless—at least that’s what others had told me. To me, it was a welcome numbness, something I needed to remain sane. It was like I was an empty shell, existing only to immerse myself in information and skills and nothing more.

I didn’t even feel nervous about the upcoming ceremonies, which I had been told could be very treacherous, especially to one such as I with so little experience using my abilities. As I stood rigidly on what had once been Riona’s dressing platform in front of her mirrors, I wondered if this was how soldiers felt before a battle: detached, like they were observing it all from somewhere else.

I looked at the older woman who was busily making adjustments to an ornate cloak draped around my shoulders and wondered who she was. I hadn’t even bothered to ask when she came to me earlier. Something about her seemed vaguely familiar, though. I just wasn’t sure exactly what.

“There you are, my dear, now it’s the right length. It’s hard to imagine you’re truly a Fairy with that height of yours. It is so rare among our species.”

I nodded and stared at her for a minute, still sure I knew her from somewhere but not really understanding why it mattered. “Do I know you?” The question seemed to come from somewhere far off as if someone else had asked it.

The corners of her eyes crinkled as she smiled and looked at me. “My name is Galene.”

My eyebrows drew together. I knew that name for some reason. I racked my brain, trying to come up with an answer. Then it hit me. “As in…Kieran’s wife?”

She nodded.

“You know who and what I am. Who my parents are.” I touched the necklace I wore.

Her smile faded a little as she glanced at it, but she nodded again. “I’ve known about you since the day you were born.” She reached up and smoothed a stray hair from my face, tucking it behind my ear. “How I wish things could have been different for you. You should have been able to grow up with us. Know us. I wonder now if what Iridia and I did was wrong.” Shaking her head, she stepped back. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”

A little of the numbness that surrounded me faded away at the stark emotion in her voice. “For what it’s worth, I understand why you did what you did. It couldn’t have been an easy choice for either of you.”

Galene nodded sadly. “No, it wasn’t. But what’s done is done. Now is not the time to dwell on the past.”

I eyed her curiously, sensing something behind her tone. “Why are you here? They wouldn’t have sent someone of your standing just to do alterations.
